A BIT ABOUT WHITE ON RICE

ORIGAMI ARTIST

My name is Ross Symons and I am a full time origami artist and stop motion animator based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Not too long ago I was working a 9-to-5 job as a website developer, but over time it became apparent that being employed by someone was never going to enable me to create the happy, free life that I wanted. Although I was competent in my work, I was not feeling fulfilled.

I found myself starting side projects all the time. One of these came out of my enjoyment practicing the traditional Japanese art of paper folding known as origami. I was always folding little paper creatures which littered my desk at work, and I kept challenging myself to create more intricate pieces.

I dedicated the entire year of 2014 to improving my craft and sharing it with world. That’s when I started my popular Instagram account, white_onrice, where I fold and post a different origami figure every day. I increased my following on this account from just 120 to over 100,000 in under 18 months! As my project grew, I wanted to become a full time origami artist and I developed an entire brand around White on Rice, which has allowed me to quit my 9-to-5 job and run my own business full time.

White on Rice creates social media content for brands and private clients, does origami commissions, origami installations and stop motion animations, which are all conceptualised, directed, photographed and edited in-house.
